This Inland Steel switcher is working one of the many steel plants along the Indiana Harbor, somewhere between Hammond and Gary, Indiana as seen from Amtrak's westbound New York-Chicago train no. 69, here running on the former New York Central mainline. The tracks in the foreground probably belong to the Elgin, Joliet & Eastern. Due to their nature as freight haulers railroads generally passed through the most heavily industrialized areas of any city, providing views otherwise unavailable to anyone but employees of the steel mills, factories and other vitally fascinating operations. Oddly, there are those who find this experience unpleasant for some reason; there's just no accounting for taste…
