Illinois Central
Chicago, Illinois (Western Ave. Station)
July 27, 1971

This "bay window cupola" caboose design was first introduced in the mid-1950's for safety reasons; having crew members sticking their heads out the side windows had obvious hazards which this design minimized. This Illinois Central caboose is here seen at the Milwaukee Road's Western Ave. station, where a wide variety of transfer runs of various roads could be seen.
