Genesee & Wyoming
Retsof, New York
August 16, 1970

Looking north from the same New York Highway 63 bridge, the Genesee & Wyoming main line leads to the wye at Retsof and the interchange with the Erie and New York Central at Caledonia. The Alco RS-1 doesn't look like it's currently in service, but that snowplow must get plenty of business during the fierce upstate New York winters.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that Retsof is Foster spelled backwards. But who was Foster? As it happens, William Foster was the founder of the town of Retsof and of the original Retsof Salt Mine.
