One of the most difficult parts of the Canadian Pacific's construction was chiseling a grade into the cliffs along the north shore of Lake Superior; not for nothing was Pierre Berton's classic account of the railroad's construction titled The Impossible Railway. The result was one of the most scenic parts of the entire transcontinental route, here seen from the westbound Canadian.
