Chicago & Western Indiana

Chicago & Western Indiana
Chicago, Illinois (Twenty-First Street Crossing)
August 19, 1981

By 1981 Twenty-First Street Crossing was only a shadow of its former glory, as is evident in this view from outbound Amtrak train no. 48, the Lake Shore Limited, running on the former Pennsylvania (by now Conrail). Covered in weeds are the remains of the Chicago & Western Indiana's multiple-track line to Dearborn Station, which once hosted trains of the Santa Fe, Monon, Chesapeake & Ohio, Erie, and Chicago & Eastern Illinois; the few that remain are now operated under the Amtrak name and use Union Station.
