Denver & Rio Grande Western [Union Pacific]
Colorado (Gore Canyon)
October 2, 1997

When Union Pacific announced its intention to acquire the Southern Pacific, newly created Burlington Northern Santa Fe chose not to contest the merger, instead settling for a package of trackage rights that practically amounted to an additional railroad. One of the newly gained routes was from Denver to Colton, California, via the former Moffat Road. Here a BNSF westbound freight is exercising these trackage rights as it approaches the south end of Gore Canyon.
